Must be something in the Ayr!

12 months to the day Emma Beag returned to Ayr to contest the same race she won last year in the 0-100, 3m 1/2f handicap hurdle – and did it again in the same emphatic style!

Although running off an 8lb higher mark this year, she came into the race in good form having recently produced a 2nd at Market Rasen (photo) in December, and a 3rd at Catterick (1 length) on New Year’s Day.

Sent off at the same price, the only difference was the going with this year’s race being run on heavy ground as opposed to the good to soft of a year ago. Otherwise it was a case of deja vu as the little mare raced & hurdled with the same enthusiasm, taking a particularly keen hold down the home straight on the first circuit.

Henry had her in touch with the leaders throughout and they went on to lead after the 4th last. Despite not being entirely fluent over the 3rd last, Emma soon went clear and was 6 lengths in front & still full of running when she let fly “Annie Power” style” at the final hurdle. Thankfully therein the similarity ended as she never looked like coming down, and scampered off up the run in to win comfortably by an eased down 3 1/4 lengths.

Emma’s connections, Maurice Friel and Mary Sadler, plus Mary’s husband Peter & their family, were all there to cheer their game little mare home and, having enjoyed Ayr Racecourse’s hospitality earlier in the day, her win in the last race rounded off a memorable day for them.
