Running in the colours of our new Brough Farm Racing Partnership for the first time, Smadynium made his debut for the stable at Kelso on Sunday (06/12) in a competitive 2m handicap hurdle.
Obviously given the recent weather, particularly in that part of the country, there was concern about a) getting there, and b) the ground. But having achieved a) and then walked the course to make sure of b) he & Henry lined up in a field of 9 runners.
Henry had him nicely settled and jumping well in the early to mid stages, and as the race got to the business end they made their move coming through strongly as the heavy ground started to take its toll on some of the runners. For a moment approaching the last it seemed he might catch the leader (to whom he was giving 9lbs) but as that horse started to wander a little causing Henry to switch Smadynium, he had to settle for a brave 2nd place beaten only two lengths, with the rest of the field four and half lengths+ behind.
The horse has come out of the race really well and we now look for his next target over the Christmas period, possibly with a return to fences and a longer trip.
So hopefully exciting times ahead for this horse and the Brough Farm Racing Partnership – there is up to 40% of the leased racing rights to this horse still available with no up front buy-in cost as he is privately owned.
